Custom Guitars
Sensi Guitar
The Sensi Guitar is a custom electric guitar with a built-in MIDI Controller.
The idea behind this guitar was to bring the interaction with sound effects into the palette of expressive tools available for the instrument, without losing the performative characteristics of the instrument.
The body of the guitar uses Alder wood. On the neck, we have Mapple and Rosewood for the scale.
The guitar has a set of Schaller M6 locking tuners, a Graph Tech PT 5010 nut, and an ABM 3255C bridge.
On the electric side of the Guitar, we have two volume pots (one per pickup) and a 3-way selector to select between bridge humbucker, neck humbucker, or both. The bridge humbucker is the Seymour Duncan SH-5 and the neck humbucker is the Seymour Duncan TB-5.
The guitar has then a parallel MIDI Controller built-in that allows direct interaction with effects.
On this controller, we have 3 linear potentiometers, one toggle switch, one momentary switch, one force resistor sensor, and an ultrasonic proximity sensor. For the ultrasonic sensor, there is also a toggle switch that can also turn on/off an effect.
All these interfaces send MIDI Control Change messages and are assignable on any device or effects unit capable of understanding these types of communication.
Construction
The construction of the Sensi Guitar took place in Portugal between 2013 and 2014 with the help of Marco Félix on the woodwork.
Multiple design tests and prototypes have been built to better accommodate and try the selection and positioning of different sensors in the guitar.
Sensi Guitar was designed and assembled by João Neves and the built-in MIDI controller code was written by João Neves
